STEAMer of the Month: OjO

In the first of our blog series celebrating our STEAM education pioneers (that's  Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) we chat to OjO who have big plans for 2019...

Tell us a little bit about what you do?

OjO is a pioneering London-based toy brand, striving to bring STEAM skills to the early years through our range of educational products and experiences.

How important do you think it is to engage young children in STEAM learning?

We believe that it’s the sooner the better when it comes to young children and STEAM learning. The benefits of engaging in hands-on, creative problem-solving activities during early childhood can’t be denied.

Are you taking measures to encourage young girls to get into science?

All our products are gender-neutral and are just as enjoyable for girls as they are for boys. When it comes to early learning, we don’t see a necessity for gender-focussed subjects or skills.

What is your ultimate ambition?

Our ambition at OjO is to make learning fun for as many children as possible!

What changes would you like to see in children’s education?

There needs to be a big shift in the UK education system towards more practical, interdisciplinary lessons with more opportunities for creative exploration. There is too much focus in the current system on assessment criteria and achieving the ‘correct outcome’. Children need the chance to experiment and learn from their mistakes in order to foster innovation for the next generation.

How do you bring the fun factor into children’s learning?

We use a combination of multi-sensory media, story-telling and attractive visuals to make our activities more accessible and therefore more fun for children.

Tell us about someone you admire?

As a toy company, of course we all look up to LEGO for inspiration. The versatility and reusability of their products is something we constantly aim for.

What's your favourite book?

Obviously aside from OKIDO publications, we love Australian parenting magazine, Lunch Lady for the entertaining writing, beautiful imagery and tasty recipes!

What's your plan for the future?

We have some BIG plans for 2019. We will be launching something very new and exciting this April. Subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on social media to be the first to find out!

With British Science week fast approaching, OKIDO and OjO have been busy working together on a super fun and secret project! To showcase the surprise, we are organising a joint GET INTO SCIENCE event at Station Hall, Herne Hill on Sunday March 10th.
